A sextet of stars and pianist of New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players perform The Pirates of Penzance in one act, with all of the famous numbers by all your favorite characters -dressed to the nines in piratical and Victorian splendor. Set sail with this classic comedy that boasts one of the most famous patter songs in musical theatre history. On the coast of Cornwall, a band of tenderhearted pirates celebrates the coming of age of Frederic, who was mistakenly apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday. Now, Frederic has vowed to devote his life to the extermination of piracy - until a ludicrous leap year snag threatens to keep him apprenticed to the pirates for life! Throw in a brash Pirate King and the delightfully stuffy Major-General Stanley and you’ve got what The New York Times calls “AN ENDEARING PRODUCTION WITH HIGH MUSICAL STANDARDS AND SPIRITED PERFORMANCES.” After intermission, the performers return in black tie and gowns to entertain the audience with many selections from the full repertoire of Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic operas- including our signature section- impromptu audience requests!

Mr. Ho's Orchestrotica - Quintet
Story-driven global jazz and chamber music

Barbara W Nelson Fine Arts Center at Bay High School
1200 Harrison Avenue, Panama City, FL 32401

In the same way a chef de cuisine runs a kitchen, percussionist Brian O’Neill leads a team of five musical creators who deftly collaborate on instruments foreign and domestic to form modernist delicacies for hungry, curious listeners. From the high arts of jazz and chamber music to adaptations of mid-century exotica and pop art, the quintet version of Mr. Ho’s Orchestrotica renders O’Neill’s original compositions and curious adaptions of Bach, Gershwin, Shostakovich and John Adams into cinematic, layered music for armchair travelers ready to journey off road.

While the quintet eschews most of the musical forms, rhythms, and styles of the 1950s exotica sound that inspired O’Neill, it fully embraces the unique genre’s love of escapism, whether through deliberate, out-of-context use of global sounds or through jazz improvisation that doesn’t swing and deliberately imitates the rhythm of a skipping record. On the listener’s plate might be equal parts scratch and sniff, bongos with a fugue, and a cat fight at a piano recital. On the stage, the ensemble skillfully negotiates detailed compositions and arrangements of classical works while relying on listening and instinct to drive passionate improvisation. The quintet has delighted ears across the US and internationally and was awarded a $15,000 touring grant from SouthArts' JazzRoad Tours program in 2024.

Peach State Opera presents
La Traviata by Verdi
Sunday, February 2, 2025
3:00 pm

Peach State Opera
presents Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata. Come see why this is one of the most popular and frequently produced operas of all time. It is a tale of a passionate love between a courtesan and her secret admirer, an overprotective father, a short lived reunion, and a tragic end. This timeless opera centers around Violetta, a woman of great intelligence and beauty of spirit crushed by the social prejudices of the time; Alfredo, a young provincial nobleman who has long adored Violetta from afar; and Germont, Alfredo’s disapproving father who persuades Violetta to leave Alfredo to protect his son’s public image. She reluctantly returns to her old life. Act III shows that Violetta’s health is quickly declining. Germont, full of remorse, tells his son the truth about why she left. Alfredo rushes to her for a beautiful reunion, before consumption finally claims her life.

La Traviata contains some of Verdi’s most beloved tunes, including Violetta’s first-act hymn to freedom, “Sempre libera,” as well as her tragic farewell to life in the last act, “Addio, del passato bei sogni,” and the most irresistible of all of Verdi’s drinking songs, “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici.”  Join Peach State Opera for an unforgettable afternoon of romance and regret, wrapped up in some of the world’s most beautiful music, sung in English.

Peach State Opera is a touring company that shares the thrill of live opera with small communities in Georgia and its surrounding states by presenting exciting and portable English-language productions. PSO resides at the Clarkston campus of Georgia State University – Perimeter College, as one of the college’s “Artist Affiliate” organizations. Artistic Director Evelyn Hughes incorporates emerging professional singers into the casts, thus giving them valuable experience as well as the performing credits necessary for a burgeoning career.
